A Wake Forest woman remains in the Halifax County Detention Center following her arrest Tuesday evening on cocaine and other drug charges.

Major Anzell Harris of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said Jeanette Velez, 40, was stopped by Sergeant G. Martin for failing to dim headlights to oncoming traffic in the area of Highway 158 and Hales Branch Road around 11 p.m.

Martin initiated a traffic stop and requested Corporal N. Estes for K9 assistance.

During an open-air sniff, HCSO canine Rocko made a positive alert to the odor of narcotics. The search of the vehicle yielded an open container of alcohol, marijuana, a folded $1 bill with cocaine inside and several items of drug paraphernalia.

Velez was arrested and charged with possession of schedule II controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, open container of alcohol and failure to wear a seatbelt.

She received a $7,500 secured bond and February 27 district court date.

Deputy J. Cooper assisted.
