Students at Halifax Community College recently attended a lecture on critical care nursing by a member of the UNC Carolina Air Care crew.

The session delved into the intricacies of transporting critical care patients and outlined the demanding requirements to become a flight nurse.

During the lecture, students gained insights into the challenges and responsibilities of critical care flight nursing.

Following the informative session, the students gathered at the campus track to witness a demonstration of UNC Carolina Air Care’s helicopter landing.

UNC Carolina Air Care, with its various bases across Eastern North Carolina, dispatched a crew from Rocky Mount for the event.

The crew completed the journey from takeoff to landing at HCC in16 minutes, “showcasing their efficiency and expertise,” the college said.

After the helicopter safely touched down, students had the opportunity to engage with the crew, posing questions about patient care in confined spaces. Additionally, they were invited inside the helicopter to explore the equipment firsthand.

Halifax Community College's nursing program integrates critical care nursing education into its curriculum in the final semester of the Associate Degree in Nursing cohort. “Steps to becoming part of any critical care transport team require years of experience in a critical care/emergency setting and a passion for wanting to make a difference in patients' lives while being able to work under pressure,” the college said. “The collaboration between UNC Carolina Air Care and Halifax Community College exemplifies a commitment to fostering education and awareness within the field of critical care nursing. Through such initiatives, aspiring healthcare professionals are equipped with the knowledge and inspiration to make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients.”
