The Chaloner Jackets baseball team found themselves in hard fought baseball game on Thursday, but they were able to keep Cornerstone Christian Patriots from scoring to get the 4-0.

Both teams were led by great pitching, and the defense by both teams was excellent.

The Jackets ended up getting 4 hits while Cornerstone had 2.

Russell Moore pitched his best game of the year for the Chaloner boys striking out 10 batters and walking none (only gave up 2 hits). Russell pitched a complete game of 7 innings. Stacy Mountford also pitched a great by only giving up 4 hits and striking out 3 batters.

Chaloner's Caleb Elias led off the first inning with a single and scored the first run of the game by good base running. Wade Jenkins led off the 3rd inning with a single. He advanced to 3rd base on Bennett Liverman's single. Jenkins scored with A.J. Strickland hit a ground ball to the 2nd baseman. Avery Johnson completed the scoring in the 6th inning with a pinch hit 2 run single that gave the Jackets a 4-0 lead and final score. Stacy Mountford and Colby Allen had hits for Cornerstone.

The Jackets are now 16-0.

On Senior Night at Doyle Field, the Roanoke Rapids High Yellow Jackets Varsity Baseball team defeated the North Carolina School of Science and Math by a score of 14-4.

Before the game the Yellow Jackets honored 11 players who were playing their final regular season home game.  Marcus Allen, Tommy Bradley, Jordan Collins, Hunter Connell, Josh Elias, Bracy Irby, Tyler Liverman, Cameron Rogerson, Jacob Rooker, Tyler Shearin, and Colby Warren were escorted to the field by their family and had their accomplishments as a part of the RRHS Baseball Program discussed.

Colby Warren picked up the win for the Yellow Jackets.  He pitched 3 innings, giving up 3 runs and striking out 4 batters.  Josh Elias came on in relief and picked up the save by pitching 3 innings giving up 1 run and striking out 4 batters.

RRHS took the lead in the first inning and wound up scoring at least one run in every inning of the game.  They had 10 hits on the night from 6 different players.  Hunter Connell, Marcus Allen, Josh Elias, and Tyler Shearin each had 2 hits while Colby Warren and Tommy Bradley had one hit each.

Post game Jackets coach Mark Snead stated, "This was a magical Senior Night for our team.  We had a wonderful ceremony before the game, beat a strong Unicorn team on the field, and had a great post game celebration for our Seniors.  11 Seniors is the most I have ever had on a team during my coaching career.  That is a testament to these young men and their families.  They have played together since they were young kids and have developed a great team chemistry while becoming a strong baseball team.  I am so proud of each and everyone of them and how they have worked hard to get better each year.  I can't say enough about this group of young men."

RRHS improves to 16-3 on the season and 10-2 in conference play.  The Yellow Jackets will return to the field next Tuesday when they travel to Southern Vance.  Game time is set for 4 pm.

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Barton College freshman Sierra Hearp has been named to the 2017 Conference Carolinas Softball All-Conference Team, the league announced Thursday evening.

Hearp was a First Team selection in the utility spot. She produced a team-high 26 RBI at the plate in her first collegiate season while playing multiple infield positions, and also posted a 7-4 pitching record while working 70 2/3 innings on the mound.

The Roanoke Rapids, N.C., resident got her collegiate career off to the best start possible, tossing a no-hitter against Saint Augustine’s University and hitting a home run in her first at-bat of the season.

Hearp hit .339 overall for the season and had a team-high .454 on-base percentage, the seventh-best average in the league.

In conference play, she batted .368 with a team-high 15 RBI. She made just three errors in 22 league games while playing games at third base, shortstop, first base and pitcher.

Hearp is the first freshman to earn all-conference honors for Barton since Kelsey Barnes and Kendall Street both did in 2009.
