Girls earn first win of the season
Roanoke Rapids hosted Northampton County Monday night in the HIVE and earned a sweep in the four non-conference match-ups.
The RRHS JV and Varsity girls earned their 1st win of the season and new head coach Jim Whitmire first win at Roanoke Rapids as well, while the JV and Varsity boys earned a win just before Christmas. Both game left Northampton remembering 3.1 seconds, that's because Roanoke Rapids won both match-ups by one point, but Northampton had possession of the ball in both games and players took a shot with 3.1 seconds on the clock and both missed earning the Jacket teams wins.
The Roanoke Rapids JV girls started the holiday break game beating Northampton County 26-16.
Leading scorers for Roanoke Rapids were: Camden Bierbaurer with 16 points and Breanna Allen with 6 points.
The JV boys continued the win streak by beating Northampton 44-43. The match-up was tied 39 all with 3:12 on the clock. Ty Simmons hit his first free throw with 6.4 seconds on the clock to take the lead and with 3.1 seconds Northampton missed a shot and Roanoke Rapids picked up the win.
Leading scorers for Roanoke Rapids were: Dre Terry with 13 points, Cameron Rogerson with 8 points, Deray Watson with 7 points, Ty Simmons with 5 points, James Mallory and Arnotti Harvey each had 3 points, Jack Neville and Ty Smith each had 2 points while Josh Elias had 1 point.
The Roanoke Rapids Varsity girls team also earned their first win on the season beating Northampton 60-52.
Leading scorers for Roanoke Rapids were: Alizae Neville with 19 while Brooke McClenny and Brianna Allen each had 12 points.
Head coach Tyler Snyder had his Roanoke Rapids Varsity boys team ready to play basketball Monday night. the Jackets scored first and took a 16-5 lead into the second period. The lead continued with a 26-18 halftime break lead. Roanoke Rapids alumnus and University of Tampa basketball player David McNair sat court side pumping the Jacket squad up and showing his support. The Jackets continued the lead heading into the 4th period with a 38-30 lead. Then with one minute and 33 seconds to go the match-up was tied 44 all and we were headed to overtime. Northampton jumped off with the lead in overtime, but with 1 minute to go, Marcus Jones hits the basket for two to take the lead 52-51. That would be enough and with 3.1 seconds on the clock, Northampton player missed his shot to end the game.
Coach Snyder had these comments after the win: " I thought we played well at times. Our Free throw shooting won us the game. Marcus Jones played extremely well scoring 23 points. I thought our defense was good when we needed it and very proud of the guys closing a game out. We still have some work to do, but I'm excited to see us get a victory before Christmas."
The JV and Varsity boys teams head to Warren County next Monday for their Christmas tournament with the JV team hitting the court at 10 AM against Southern Vance.
