RRHS Tennis
The Roanoke Rapids High School Lady Jackets’ tennis
team entered the last week of the regular season with
a 4-1 record in the Northern Carolina 2-A Conference.
Wednesday they played host to a very talented and
strong Durham School of the Arts. The ladies from
Durham made short work of the Lady Jackets, defeating
them 0-9.
Although many of the games were tightly contested,
RRHS #1 seed Jenny Sheley dropped her singles match
to Rachael Rice, 1-6, 0-6. With RRHS #2 seed Addie Nixon
out sick, Emily Burnette had to step up in her slot to take
on the powerful Una Healey. Healey won the match 0-6,
1-6. Mary Alice Clements slid up into the #3 slot to take
on DSA’s Rachel Huang, in which Huang came out the
victor, 0-6, 1-6. Playing in the #4 slot, Mary Carlson was
defeated by Stacy Powell 1-6, 1-6. RRHS’s Emma Barber
stepped up to take on DSA’s #5 seed Emma Brown, who
defeated Barber 0-6, 0-6. In the #6 match, RRHS’s Joan
Navarro was defeated by Lucy Sasser 0-6, 0-6.
The doubles matchups were not much better. DSA’s #1
pair of Rice and Brown defeated the Lady Jackets team
of Sheley and Burnette, 1-8. The #2 team of Clements
and Carlson dropped their match to DSA’s Huang and
Powell 0-8. The RRHS #3 doubles team of Ashley Fennell
and Abby Mederos fell to DSA’s Temple Walston and
Hannah Yeuh, 2-8.
The 4-2 Lady Jackets will take on South Granville Thursday
afternoon at Emry Park. This will be the last match of the
regular season. The match is scheduled to start at 4:30 PM.
