Major Scott Hall of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said deputies S. Bryant and S. Casey were conducting the checking station along Highway 258 in the Scotland Neck area with assistance from town police officers A. Holland and J. Valasik.
While the driver, Travis Turner Jr., 31, was being arrested, Casey witnessed the passenger, Christian Gurganus, 27, attempt to conceal a plastic bag in her shorts.
Officers had the woman exit the vehicle and it was discovered the bag contained cocaine and marijuana. Casey noticed 10 bindles of heroin on the floorboard.
Turner was arrested and charged with possession of heroin, possession of cocaine, maintaining a vehicle to store a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and trespassing. He was jailed on $17,000 secured bond.
Gurganus was charged with possession of heroin, possession of cocaine, maintaining a vehicle to keep a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and two orders for arrest for failure to appear in court.
She was jailed on $90,000 secured bond.
They each have June 17 court dates.
Hall said it was unclear whether the pair was picking up or delivering.
