Discussion of the matter came up at council's meeting earlier this month when the panel approved a document recognizing Charter's switchover to Comcast.
Discussions with Charter's local government liaison, however, determined the discount was valid and will now be honored, the city manager said.
Scherer said customers need to provide the Charter office with an annual entitlement letter, which can be obtained through the Social Security office.
The local Social Security Administration plans to put fliers at the Charter office explaining the discount is available to senior citizens.
In another matter police Chief Thomas Hathaway, in thanking the city for an $8,000 appropriation in this year's budget to buy eight body cameras for officers, told council that seven businesses donated $8,000 to buy eight more.
Also this evening council approved the waiver of competitive bidding to use the city of Thomasville's bid of $169,791 to buy a new trash truck.
This amount saves the city about $26,000, Scherer said.
Piggybacking procedures in North Carolina statutes allow cities to use the bids of other cities.
Scherer said the city plans to use installment financing, which will be discussed at its August meeting, to buy the truck.
