Terry Smith, 27, reportedly managed to escape from officers three times Monday morning before they got him into custody and he was jailed on $3,500.

The events unfolded around 1 a.m. as Officer D.M. McKeel was in his patrol car stationary when Smith allegedly spun his tires and accelerated rapidly on Main Street, according to Lieutenant J. Tippett.

The driver and three people were inside the vehicle.

The vehicle turned right onto East Thirteenth Street and immediately drove up a curve and into a residence, where Smith reportedly fled the scene.

McKeel stayed with the vehicle and its other occupants. At some point Smith came back and McKeel chased him on foot.

McKeel ran Smith a city block before he cut behind some businesses on Main Street and headed back to Twelfth Street where Officer C.E. Exum saw McKeel heading.

Smith nearly hit Exum's vehicle has he darted from behind a business onto the street.

Exum chased Smith on foot and tackled him to the ground. Smith managed to break free three times while reportedly attempting to retrieve something from his pocket. During the struggle Smith reportedly tossed a pill bottle that contained five ecstasy tablets. The container was later seized.

Digital scales and plastic bags were also seized.

Open alcohol containers were located in the vehicle. During the chase, however, the other occupants fled.

Smith, who has a September 3 court date, was charged with the following:

Possession with intent to sale and deliver Schedule I

Possession of drug paraphernalia

Driving while license revoked

Careless and reckless driving

Fail to wear seatbelt

Assault on a government official

Resist public officer

Possess open container of alcohol

Injury to personal property
