With two people now in custody, the Halifax County Sheriff's Office is trying to figure out the motive behind a March 24 shooting that occurred in the South Weldon area of Eleventh Street known as The Strip.

Bellfield, left, and Ponton

“I can't say with certainty what the motive was,” Detective Chris Scott said Monday night. “It was some kind of misunderstanding.”

What is known is that Omar Daquan Ponton, 21, and Raheem Jamal Bellfield, 22, both of Weldon, allegedly fired shots at a victim who was not harmed.

Ponton was arrested in Baltimore March 28 after being developed as an alleged suspect in the case, and entered into national criminal databases as an armed and dangerous person.

Ponton was arrested following a traffic stop by Baltimore police. It was unclear why he was there, and there is no evidence he committed any crimes while on the lam.

He waived extradition and was brought back to Halifax County Monday evening where he faces a charge of attempted first-degree murder. He was jailed on $100,000 bond, and awaits an April 30 court date.

Baltimore police, Scott said, recognized the flag on Ponton.

Meanwhile, Bellfield was arrested Friday and faces the same charge, and has the same court date, as Ponton, although he was being held without the opportunity for bond.

Scott said the case remains open.
