The stated reason, according to the statement, was “because of all the delays and complications created by Roanoke Rapids City Officials and the N.C. Department of Transportation in this season of primary election fervor.”
McCollum stated the permit to assemble and march was applied for as early as February 24, yet HCBC was not cleared for the march until April 2, just 48 hours before the march was to take place.
“Leaders of the HCBC and the Halifax County NAACP consider the fact that the application for the original route, from the Halifax Community College to the King Park, to honor Dr. King was delayed and forfeited because of political maneuvering by city officials of Roanoke Rapids and the DOT,” the statement said.
However, the Commemorative Rally will be held at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park on Virginia Avenue, Roanoke Rapids at 1 p.m. as scheduled.
Community and civil rights leaders will be present to address citizens concerning the legacy of Dr. King, the memory of Travon Martin and Jordan Davis, as well as community issues in the Roanoke Valley, especially the “Saving of Our Children.”
