A trash barrel fire that spread across the backyard of a house on Norris Lane destroyed a shed and threatened to consume the house where the shed was located as well as a neighboring shed and house.

Davie, Rheasville and Roanoke Rapids firefighters spared the two houses and the neighboring shed, but fire did lick the vinyl siding and lattice work of the house where the fire started, Davie Chief David Padgett said. Anywhere from 2 to 3 acres of grass was also burned by the fire, firefighters said.

Padgett said the fire brought flames up to the front porch of the house at 45 Norris Lane, where the trash barrel was located. He estimated damage to the outside of the house was anywhere between $2,500 to $3,000.

“They were very fortunate,” Padgett said, that the fire didn't do more damage.

Smoke from the fire, located off Zoo Road, could be seen rising from Highway 125 outside of Roanoke Rapids.
