Roanoke Rapids police could only speculate this morning that a dispute sparked the events that led to the woman sustaining severe injuries, including possible broken ribs.
Officer Gerald Morris, along with other members of D Squad, responded to Monroe Street shortly before 9:30 p.m. after receiving a report that a woman was dragged down the street, hollering and screaming, before being taken inside a residence.
Officers discovered the woman was beaten.
Police charged James Cain with kidnapping, resist, delay and obstruct, injury to personal property, false imprisonment and assault on a female.
The resist and obstruct charge comes from Cain allegedly refusing to cooperate with police while the injury to property charge comes from him allegedly breaking a lens on the headlight of a patrol car.
This is Cain's second brush with the law in the last month, Captain Andy Jackson said, as police dealt with him New Year's Eve when he barricaded himself in his house, reportedly threatening to shoot himself and law enforcement.
For the Tuesday charges, Cain was being held without the opportunity for bond.
