Put me in coach

I have photographed local sports for going on 13 years now and one thing I see over, over and over is a full bench of players who never play.

Well, if you want to count the five seconds on the court or that one at bat or even that one play on the field as playing, I guess I am talking about not feeling like part of the team.

Most teams have 15 players on a team, well only five can play basketball at once and only nine can fit on a diamond at a time and with 40 or 50 on a football team, there can't be but 11 on the field at once.

Let's see if every kid can't see some action, and I mean more than five seconds and one at bat.

All sports school or professional are mostly about winning, but young age sports should in my opinion be about recreational play and learning the game — rules, leadership, teamwork, memories and friendship and learning winning is not everything. Yes it is something, but not everything.

We all know some teams, whether it be school or recreational, are not equal and not all talent skills the same.

And trust me, I have been involved myself trying to equal the playing field and it is not an easy job by any means, so my real opinion is not about that.

But when you see a bench 15 players deep and everyone commits to practice every day and makes it to every game and sits and waits for his or her turn to play and the only action they see is warm up and shaking the opponents hand at the end is just a moral and self esteem drop for some.

Don't get me wrong, winning is good and all coaches want to win and if a game is close, as a coach play who you think are your best, but please if it is a non-conference game or you are up by 10 runs, 20 points, give all your players a chance to play the game. I mean that is why they signed up and why they come to practice every day and do their best.

No child wants to be on a losing team every game and some kids don't mind just dressing out as part of the team, but give them all a chance because they are trying, not because of what their name is or who their parents are. Put them in because they are making an effort and trying to learn the game and supporting the team.

Every coach in every sport should be thanked for what they do for the children.

Good or bad in any parents eyes, you have taken the time to instruct these kids to the best of your ability, most time for free.

I for one could not do it as a coach but would always support every child for trying to play, so please let them play — Randy Wrenn
