As the Chris Harrison and Monte Hines murder investigation continues, the Halifax County Sheriff's Office confirmed what it believes to be a motive of robbery.

Sheriff Wes Tripp also confirmed this morning thatinvestigation has led detectives to believe that one of the people charged, Tierra Burnell, was Harrison's ex-girlfriend.

While he would not elaborate, Tripp said, “We have strong indication the motive is robbery.”

Tripp would not elaborate on the relationship between Harrison and Burnell, only to say investigators believe they were involved romantically. That she was charged with conspiracy in Harrison's murder indicates the relationship at some point soured.

The sheriff's office continues to follow-up on leads in the case, not only in Harrison's death, but in the death of Hines, who was found between Harrison's house and an abandoned dwelling off Zoo Road South.

Burnell, a 27-year-old Halifax woman, was the second person apprehended in the October 27 home invasion.

She was arrested last week at the Whistling Pines Motel in Elizabeth City, where she had been staying since October 30.

She was booked on charges of murder, accessory before the fact of armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

Jimmel Horton turned himself in earlier last week.

Investigators believe Horton is the man who allegedly shot Harrison.

Tripp said the sheriff's office is also continuing to investigate the death of Hines, who was shot in the stomach and is believed to be a participant in the home invasion. The sheriff said Hines's wound shows the bullet exited from his back area.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the sheriff's office at 252-583-1991 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
