Multiple media outlets today are reporting the death of a Roanoke Rapids man who was shot and killed by sheriff's deputies following an armed robbery and subsequent chase that ended in Wilson County Sunday morning.

Local law enforcement in Halifax County does not recall any recent dealings with Garrett Brooks, 28, of Roanoke Rapids, although it is believed his mother may live here.

Smithfield police, according to news accounts, say he allegedly robbed a Kangaroo Express and hijacked a car located at a nearby car wash.

News accounts say the shooting happened as the chase ended on Highway 42 near Interstate 95 in Wilson County. Wilson and Johnston County deputies fired at the man after he crashed into a deputy's car.

Several police cars were damaged during the chase. There was no immediate word on injuries to any officers.

The State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the shooting.
