A vehicle believed to be involved in a hit and run this morning was found in the Three Bridges Road area unoccupied, according to the state Highway Patrol.

The vehicle, identified as a Ford Edge, had significant damage to the front end and windshield, Trooper J.D. Warren said.

The vehicle has been seized and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation will come Wednesday for processing.

Warren said investigation by troopers, the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and Roanoke Rapids Police Department led to the discovery of the vehicle. “It was a team effort.”

Locating the vehicle, he said, “It’s very significant to the investigation. The biggest obstacle is to determine who was driving the vehicle. Hopefully with assistance from the SBI we can narrow it down.”

Having registration information, Warren said, “That doesn’t necessarily mean the owner  was the driver.”

The Highway Patrol is not releasing the name of the person the vehicle is registered to because the investigation to determine who was driving it remains underway.

The vehicle was found around 2:30 p.m.

Warren said the victim of the hit and run, Dondrell Person, 24, of the Weldon area, is still being treated at an undisclosed medical facility.

Person, a sanitation worker with Unity Disposal and Recycling, was on the job when he was struck around 7:20 this morning on Carolina Rest Home Road.

Troopers said earlier today there were no signs of braking.
