According to the American Heart Association, about 2,200 Americans die of cardiovascular disease each day.

In an effort to reduce this number, Roanoke Clinic is participating in a five-year risk reduction model for heart attacks and strokes referred to as the Million Hearts Model.

This randomized control trial, led by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, will identify lessons learned to assist in taking better care of future Medicare patients.

Roanoke Clinic is one of 11 practices in North Carolina fortunate enough to be selected to participate in this research model.

Closing out the first year, Roanoke Clinic has enrolled 1,243 beneficiaries, and of the enrolled beneficiaries, 267 have been identified as “high risk” for having a heart attack or stroke in the future.

The providers at Roanoke Clinic are working diligently with the high risk patients to educate them on diet and lifestyle changes while also making needed changes to their healthcare regimen.

The hope is to improve their heart health, therefore, lowering their risk of having a heart attack or stroke.
