Detective B.C. Griffin this evening would not disclose the name of the construction site where the wire was stolen or get into details of how the 4,000 pounds was carried away in a car.
He did say the wire stolen was thick industrial grade.
How much of the wire was sold remains under investigation, he said.
In a statement on the matter Sheriff Wes Tripp said investigation began on March 3 when the victim reported the break-in and subsequent larceny of the wire from the construction site in the Halifax area.
Value of the wire stolen was approximately $23,000, Tripp said in the statement.
The following day, Lieutenant George Evans was following up and located some of the wire and returned it to the victim.
Continued investigation by Griffin and Detective R.M. Brown, with assistance from the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office and Rocky Mount Police Department, resulted in the discovery of 1,500 pounds of the stolen wire at a residence in Rocky Mount, Tripp said. Its value was around $9,000.
Griffin charged Cody Peterson, 23, of Roanoke Rapids, Dustin Floyd, 26, of Seaboard, and John Stallings, 28, of Rocky Mount with breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, possession of stolen property, possession of stolen property from a construction site, and unlawful transportation of copper.
Griffin said this evening Peterson and Stallings are half-brothers while Floyd is a friend.
The three also face charges in Edgecombe County of possession of stolen property.
Peterson also has charges in Roanoke Rapids and Pitt County, Griffin said.
Peterson has a $75,000 bond. The others have $30,000 bonds. They have March 15 court dates.
