Captain Bobby Martin said alcohol use played a factor as well as other issues which were never fully substantiated.
He said the matter, in which Timothy Godsey, 32, was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and discharging a firearm inside city limits, was one in which the department’s crisis intervention played a role in reaching a peaceful outcome.
“I think it helps tremendously,” Martin said. “It makes you open your eyes to why this person is doing this, what’s happened in their life to do this.”
Martin said additional resources were provided following the arrest.
Police received a disturbance call shortly before 4 a.m. and began an investigation. Officers heard what sounded like a shot fired and learned Godsey was inside.
The responding officers established contact with him and after about an hour-and-a-half of communication encouraged him to exit the residence.
No one was hurt.
Godsey received a $2,500 bond and March 15 court date.
Officers Obert Wiltsie, Scott Blythe, and Alex Green, as well as Sergeant Mike Moseley and Lieutenant Bruce Norton investigated the case.

Benjamin France 17, and Carson West, 18, of Roanoke Rapids, were charged Sunday with damage to property.
The charges stem from an investigation by Officer Hannah Grimes based on February 17 reports of damage to mailboxes.
They have March 24 court dates.
