Board Chair Jay Carlilse, right, honors Brewer, as Superintendent Dain Butler looks on.

Brewer was appointed last month to fill the county board of commissioners seat left vacant by the death of Rachel Hux.
Brewer thanked the board and the district staff for their service to the children and the community.
New board member Mike Salanik was appointed last week to fill Brewer’s unexpired term. He was sworn in tonight by Judge Turner Stephenson.

Other matters

In other action, the board directed staff to develop a policy to allow sixth graders to begin playing sports fall of 2017.
The move comes after the state opened up middle school athletics to sixth graders who meet the eligibility requirements.
Middle school sports allowed in North Carolina include softball, volleyball, wrestling, track, soccer, baseball, cheerleading and basketball.
State policy does not allow football participation until a child reaches 7th grade.

Teachers in the district will also get an added employment benefit. The board voted unanimously to pay the state professional license renewal fee for current teachers.
