The Roanoke Rapids Graded School District Board of Education Monday approved $30,000 in architectural fees to start the process of developing an early college on the campus of Roanoke Rapids High School.

The early college, which would open in 2018, would provide increased opportunities for students to earn an associate’s degree or up to two years college transfer credit while simultaneously completing the requirements for high school graduation.
“We’ve got to diversify how high school students get their diploma,” said Superintendent Dain Butler. “This is also a savings of time and money for our students and their families.”
More than 50 students have also expressed interest in attending.
Plans call for a metal building to be erected on Jefferson Street beside the current junior parking lot.
The building would include six large classrooms, administrative space and lavatories at a cost of approximately $780,000.
