It was not immediately clear where the man, Robin Jeffrey, obtained the bill or whether he made it himself, said Detective B.R. Nutt of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.
Nutt said Jeffrey, 35, of Roanoke Rapids, reportedly paid 23-year-old Malika Hockaday to cash the bogus bill.
Chief Deputy Scott Hall said in a statement the sheriff’s office received a report on November 7 counterfeit money was passed at a store in Roanoke Rapids.
Nutt’s investigation led to the arrest of Hockaday, who is from Roanoke Rapids, on charges of larceny by employee, possession of a counterfeit instrument or currency and misdemeanor conspiracy.

Hockaday received a $1,000 unsecured bond and a December 2 court date.
Nutt said Hockaday was arrested at work.
Meanwhile, Hall said in the statement Nutt obtained warrants on Jeffery,35, for uttering a forged instrument, possession of a counterfeit instrument or currency and misdemeanor conspiracy.
Nutt said Jeffrey tends to frequent areas of Roanoke Rapids, including the Highway 48 area and Enfield.
