The Roanoke Rapids Police Department has filed charges in an October chase which ended when the alleged suspect, a 41-year-old Portsmouth, Virginia, man, crashed into a tractor-trailer.

Chief Chuck Hasty said in a statement Aaron D. Houston was arrested by Vidant Hospital police on October 20 after his release from the medical facility.
He faces charges of flee to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, two counts of injury to property, attempted larceny, reckless driving, no operator’s license, two counts of failure to remain at the scene of an accident and being a fugitive from another state.
Houston remains in Halifax County jail on $15,000 bond and has a Wednesday court date.
He also faces charges in Northampton County of no operator’s license, fail to heed blue light and siren and giving fictitious information to an officer. He has a Thursday court date in Northampton County.
The charges stem from an attempted larceny in Roanoke Rapids in the area of The Store Next Door.
Houston refused to stop for responding officers and struck a city patrol car while fleeing the area.
The pursuit continued into Gaston where Roanoke Rapids officers lost sight of him. Northampton County Sheriff’s Office deputies located him and continued pursuit until the man hit a tractor-trailer outside Seaboard.
Hasty said this afternoon investigating officers suspect Houston fled because he had an outstanding warrant for a probation violation from Virginia. It was not clear whether he had ties to the area or was passing through.
The state Highway Patrol did not file charges against Houston but did determine he was at fault for the ensuing crash after fleeing from law enforcement at a high rate of speed and then striking the right rear tires of the rig’s trailer, according to a report by Trooper D.L. Edwards.
