RRPD roundup: Assault and blotter

The Roanoke Rapids Police Department received a call about an attempted kidnapping and assault in the 1300 block of Chase Avenue Sunday morning around 12:30.

Chief Chuck Hasty said in a statement  Sergeant Mike Moseley responded to investigate and learned the victim was outside talking on a cellphone when a person described as a white male wearing a ski mask and gloves approached the victim from behind.

The man pulled to the victim to the backyard where a struggle ensued and the victim’s clothes were ripped.

The victim fought off the suspect, who fled toward Tenth Street and Georgia Avenue.

Hasty declined to release the gender of the victim.

The man was further described as wearing a black shirt and jeans.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., Investigator Gorton Williams served Curtis Lamonte Graham, 32, of Roanoke Rapids, with warrants for larceny and possession of stolen goods after he surrendered to face the charges.  

The charges stem from a report from August 8 when the victim reported their wallet was stolen after it was dropped inside a local business.  

Williams reviewed the video surveillance and developed Graham and Kenneth Lamont Young, 33, of Margaretsville, as alleged suspects in the larceny.

Graham received a $1,000 bond and September 21 court date.

Young is encouraged to surrender to take care of this matter.

At approximately 12:15 a.m., Lieutenant Jeff Baggett, Moseley and Officer Alex Green went to a business in the 1300 block of Julian R. Allsbrook Highway to attempt to locate a person with outstanding warrants.

While not finding the intended person, they did encounter Dondril Lenea Powell, 21, of Roanoke Rapids, who was causing a disturbance.

Powell, who was asked to leave the property numerous times by employees, would leave and return.

Officers also asked her to leave but returned again. Green told her she was under arrest for trespassing but she refused to be handcuffed. She was taken into custody and charged with trespassing, drunk and disruptive and resist, delay and obstruct.

She received a $1,500 bond and September 30 court date.

 

At approximately 1:44 a.m., Baggett and Moseley responded to MIR’s Sports Grill and Bar on a disturbance call.

While the officers were clearing the lot, Moseley noticed Terrante Marice Hawkins, 29, of Roanoke Rapids, remove a handgun from his waistband.

Moseley determined Hawkins had a concealed weapons permit but had been drinking,

Hawkins was arrested and charged with possessing a concealed weapon while consuming alcohol.  

He received a $500 bond and September 30 court date.

 

At approximately 2:30 a.m., Baggett conducted a traffic stop for a violation on East Tenth Street.  Baggett determined the driver, Lorandy Lee Broady, of Gaston, was impaired and his license was revoked.  

Baggett arrested and charged Broady with driving while impaired and driving while license revoked.

He received a $15,000 bond and September 12 court date.

Master Officer Adam Salmon assisted.

 

At approximately 7 a.m., Officer Natara Velazquez responded to a report of a vehicle striking a pole at the Highway 125 New Dixie Mart.

Velazquez determined the driver, Ken Norman Burgwyn, 38, of Rocky Mount, was impaired and his license was revoked.

He was arrested and charged with driving while impaired, driving while license revoked, open container and expired registration.

He received a $500 bond and September 23 court date.

Officer Patrick Smith and Halifax County Deputy Derrick Moore assisted.

 

At approximately 3:30 p.m., Officer Ryan Cross arrested Lacresia Shadale Brewer in the 300 block of Franklin Street on outstanding warrants for breaking/entering a motor vehicle and larceny.  

The charges stem from a case investigated by the Warren County Sheriff’s Office.  

Brewer received a  $10,000 bond and September 14 court date.

 

Sunday, August 28, 2016

At approximately 2 a.m., Baggett, Moseley and Green responded to a large disturbance at MIR’s.

Moseley saw Justin Steven Harvey, 28, of Roanoke Rapids, with an open bottle of liquor in the parking lot.

When Moseley approached, Harvey threw the bottle and another object down.

Moseley found a handgun on the ground and arrested Harvey for carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of spirituous liquor in public.

He received a $5,000 bond and September 21 court date.

 

At approximately 1 p.m., Smith responded to a call about a domestic disturbance at a residence in the 200 block of Taylor Street.

Smith learned Brenda Lee James, 48, and Mack Arthur Shearin assaulted each other and both had injuries.  

James was arrested and charged with assault and Shearin was arrested and charged with assault on a female.  

They were jailed without opportunity for bond and have September 23 court dates.

Master Officer Gerald Morris assisted.

 

At approximately 9 p.m., Green responded to a larceny call at Walmart.

Loss prevention reported Brittany Aliece May, 18, of Roanoke Rapids, took items.

Green cited May for larceny and possession of stolen goods.

She was released until her October 28 court date.
