Northampton County Sheriff Jack Smith said he believes his “officers acted properly” when they fatally shot a 59-year-old man while responding to a domestic assault call in Pleasant Hill Friday night.

“It is unfortunate the deputies had to use deadly force. However, we expect the deputies to use deadly force when their lives are threatened,” the sheriff said in a statement released this afternoon.
Sergeant Chris Collier and Deputy Teodore Antunez Jr. arrived at the Big John Store Road residence around 7:45 p.m. Friday, the sheriff’s office said in the statement.

Pamela Faison reported Melvin Faison had assaulted her. Smith said deputies had been to residence in the past on a domestic call. He said “it was obvious she had been struck.”
When the deputies attempted to arrest Mr. Faison, he reportedly pointed a handgun at them. They retreated and set up a perimeter.
Around 9:15 p.m., Faison exited the residence in the 4000 block of Big John Store Road and pointed a gun at the officers. The officers shot at Mr. Faison, who went back in the residence.
Smith then requested the SBI to respond.
Northeastern District agents, special response team members, the bomb squad and hostage negotiators responded. Around 3:30 a.m. Saturday, the SRT entered and discovered Mr. Faison was fatally shot.
Collier and Antunez are on administrative leave, which is part of the sheriff’s office policy pending completion of the SBI investigation.
Smith said he didn’t know how long the SBI investigation would take.
