Eleven young women from the area competed in the program this year and more than $16,000 in scholarships were awarded on the stage.
She is a rising senior at Roanoke Rapids High School and plans to attend Meredith College after graduation.
She performed a lyrical dance to Something in the Water.
She was sponsored by Drugco Discount Pharmacies.
“I am extremely excited and very honored to be going to the state program in January and make everyone proud,” she said this afternoon.
As a group, the girls practiced twice a week and she practiced her talent performance and fitness routine every day.
Medlin plans to to study early childhood after graduating Roanoke Rapids next year. She plans to be an elementary school teacher.
“We are so excited that Mira Medlin was named 2017 Distinguished Young Woman of Roanoke Valley,” the DYW program said on its Facebook page. “She wowed the judges and shines bright on and off stage. All of the participants should hold their heads high and be so proud of themselves. To see how far these girls have come since we first met them and the friendships and memories made is worth it all.”
Medlin will go on to compete in the Distinguished Young Women of North Carolina Program in Greensboro in January.
