Braxton Coggins built the tables based on a design Newsome gave him, his father, Stacy Coggins, said.
Newsome, who died in January, was an influence on the Coggins family, said Stacy, who is the Roanoke Rapids fire chief. “I've known Mike all my life. He was a positive influence on me.”
The task to build the tables was not an easy one for his 14-year-old son. “It was a mental and physical endeavor,” his father said.

A freshman at Roanoke Rapids High School, Braxton, a member of Troop 238, was recognized by his court of honor last week and also received a certificate from the Halifax Resolves Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.
The certificate reads, “For outstanding achievement and exceptional leadership evidenced by his attainment of the rank of Eagle Scout.”

Ken Wilson, president of the chapter, presented the certificate to Braxton, whose mother is Angela Coggins.
“We're extremely proud of him,” Stacy said. “He's extremely proud and humbled in a good way.”
