Halifax County commissioners today agreed to begin accepting applications for a committee to guide the rehabilitation of the Joseph Montfort Amphitheater, the original home of the outdoor drama First for Freedom.

The formation of the committee came up during County Manager Tony Brown's report to the board, asking the panel in what direction they would like to go since the lease was signed back to the county in July.

“I still feel like we need outside influence and community support,” Commissioner Rives Manning said.

Manning suggested an 11-person committee, which was approved by the board, with one from the historical association, one from the state historic site, one from Preservation Halifax, a county commissioner and then people from the community who have an interest in preserving the outdoor theater. “We've got people who have been with it since 1975.”

Board Chair Vernon Bryant said before Manning's motion was approved, “I want to make sure the entire county is represented,” regarding geography, gender and race.

Brown said the only matter which has still not been addressed is what the committee's role will be. “My process is to identify what the group is to do — non-profit, rehabilitation.”

Bryant said he believed in establishing the committee, “You have to have a clear direction on how you would charge that committee. It needs to set goals and objectives.”

Manning suggested let the committee narrow down what its function will be. “My hope is to use it by July 4. The longer we delay it, the less chance that will happen.”

Commissioner Marcelle Smith said, “If we go ahead and carry the motion, that will get the ball rolling. Until we establish the committee, we can't get anywhere.”
