The Northampton County Sheriff’s Office arrested four teens and will file juvenile petitions for five underage students for their reported involvement in a fight at Northampton County High School Monday morning.

The teens and juveniles will face simple affray charges, Captain M.D. DeLoatch Sr. said.

Those arrested were Markel Reid, 17, of Rich Square; Eric Kendall, 17, of Weldon; Tracy Pugh, 17, of Woodland, and Jeremiah Lashley, 18, of Garysburg.

They had first appearances in court Tuesday to be advised of their rights and will appear in court again on January 7.

DeLoatch said no one was seriously injured in the fight, which occurred right around the opening of school.

Motive is still unclear, DeLoatch said. “No one is saying anything about what was going on and we don't want to speculate.”

The matter remains under investigation and more charges could be filed.

“The Northampton County Sheriff’s Office will continue to work with school officials and do our utmost to ensure the safety of our students and staff,” Sheriff Jack Smith said in a statement. “I encourage students to bring any concerns to the teachers, guidance counselors, or school administrators and never result to violence to settle differences.”
