Son arrested; father sought in purse theft

A father and son face charges stemming from the theft of a purse and allegedly using the victim's credit card to buy clothing items in excess of $500.

The son, 16-year-old Demetri Montavious Hawkins, was arrested today, while his father, Demetrius Hawkins, 42, remains at large, according to Detective Chris Scott of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.

The younger Hawkins faces charges of misdemeanor larceny, possession of stolen goods, financial card theft, felony conspiracy and four counts of obtain property by false pretenses.

His father faces charges of two counts of obtain property by false pretense, three counts of aid and abet obtain property by false pretense, felony conspiracy, possession of stolen goods and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

This case is still under investigation with more charges pending on one or both suspects. Scott said the purse was stolen in a public place, but declined to elaborate.

The younger Hawkins was jailed on $2,000 bond and has an April 30 court date.
