Davie firefighters initially suspected the house, located down a path off the main road, was unoccupied.
However, a woman at the scene who would only identify herself as a family member, said her aunt had been living there.
The occupant had been staying with relatives for several weeks after being released from the hospital.
In the wake of the fire, the woman said, “She will be with her family.”
Halifax County EMS told other family members the American Red Cross was notified and was en route to the scene.
Firefighters responded to the scene shortly before 4 p.m. and observed smoke and fire coming from the residence, Davie Chief David Padgett said.
Rheasville also assisted.
As of this report it was unclear what started the fire. The house had electrical power.
The bulk of fire damage appeared to be on the left front portion of the wood-framed house, in which many items stored inside could be observed.
Padgett said the house was a total loss.
