A certified nursing assistant at a long-term care facility has been charged with patient abuse and neglect following an investigation by the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Detective Robert Hale said this afternoon the employee, John Earl Fenner, 58, of Halifax, reportedly physically assaulted an elderly patient. The patient, he said, was not seriously injured. The facility is located in the south end of the county.
Hale said it was not immediately clear what provoked the assault. It is not believed the patient did anything to provoke the alleged assault.
Hale said Fenner was suspended pending the outcome of his investigation into the matter and is not currently working.
In a statement, Chief Deputy Scott Hall said the facility reported the alleged abuse on August 10.
Fenner was arrested and charged on August 18. He received a $10,000 bond and September 28 court date.
