Chief Melvin Garner said Deputy T. Atunez responded to a call shortly after midnight where Halifax Regional reported the victim was being treated for a gunshot wound.
The victim, whose name and age Garner declined to release, was shot once with a handgun over what the chief said in a statement appears to be a dispute which occurred at least a week ago related to a Facebook post. He declined to elaborate.
The victim was shot at Turner’s Grocery. The victim was initially transported to Halifax Regional by private vehicle and then airlifted to a trauma center.
Witnesses are cooperating and there is a person of interest in the case.
He said Sergeant C. Collier and deputies K. Henderson and A. Leitner of the sheriff’s office also assisted in the case.
