Roanoke Rapids City Council this evening recognized several employee milestones and achievements at its regular meeting.

Police department

Police Chief Chuck Hasty recognized the retirement of Dozier, who is handled by Master Officer Gerald Morris. Council approved Morris taking the dog, which was received from the military in 2013, into his care.

Over his career, Dozier helped seize 29.64 pounds of marijuana; 5.63 ounces of cocaine; 40 grams of heroin including 89 bindles in one search alone; 45.6 grams of crack, 100 rocks found in one search alone; 1.5 grams of meth; 12.5 grams of ecstasy; .23 grams of other drugs; 237 dosage units of pills and $23,678 in currency.

Hasty also noted Dozier performed 38 tracks; located three people resulting in the service of felony warrants and helped officers lead to the recovery of stolen property.

Hasty recognized officers Matt Hunsucker and Chris Biggerstaff for helping a woman after a wreck and for installing a flat tire, after taking it to get air put back in it. The officers, a letter to Hasty noted, also helped when two dogs were hit by a car.

Hasty then introduced council to two new officers — Hannah Grimes and Dustin Newsome.

Grimes is the daughter of John and Donna Grimes and holds a bachelor of science degree in biology with a minor in criminal justice from East Carolina University. She completed the BLET program at Halifax Community in May.

Newsome, the son of Kelvin and Donna Newsome, began his career with the Scotland Neck Police Department followed by the Halifax County Sheriff's Office. He was sworn in by Roanoke Rapids on June 10.

BARC scholarships

Human Resources Manager Kathy Kearney announced the recipients of the Benevolent Awards and Recognition Committee scholarships for this year.

Parents of the students — Catherine Acree, Kameron Lasky and Hunter Martin accepted the scholarships on their behalf.

Their parents are Danny Acree, Kelly Lasky and Bobby Martin.

Each student received a $500 scholarship, in which funds were raised by employee donations and fundraisers.

Planning and development

Meanwhile, Lasky recognized Code Enforcement Supervisor Brian Duhadaway for his successful completion of Level III Inspector Certification.

The certification recognizes Duhadaway in four areas of enforcement of North Carolina codes — building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical.

He passed the electrical level III exam in March and received his certificate from the Code Qualification Board at the end of April.

The level III designation means Duhadaway can inspect any building in the state.

“This is just not about passing a test or completing a class,” Lasky said. “Brian's accomplishment represents a commitment to the city's investment in his career. Brian has taken 14 courses and 14 certification exams since 2004 to achieve this highest level accomplishment.”
