The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Shane Guyant:

On Saturday Master Officer K. Williams responded to a suspicious vehicle call in the I-95 northbound lane near the 173-mile marker where a vehicle was in the lanes of travel with brake lights on.

Williams then received a call that the vehicle had been struck by a tractor-trailer. Guyant said the vehicle was clipped by the tractor-trailer and caused minimal damage.

The driver of the vehicle, Karen Burchett, 42, of Greenville, appeared to be under the influence of an impairing substance. Burchett had an outstanding order for arrest for failing to appear in court from a February 2023 DWI charge in Pitt County.

Several open containers of alcoholic beverages were located inside Burchett's vehicle as well as an alcoholic beverage in the cupholder.

She was placed under arrest for the OFA and suspicion of driving while impaired. The woman requested medical aid at the hospital but refused to consent to a blood draw.

Williams obtained a search warrant for a blood draw.

Burchett was medically released and transported to the Halifax County Detention Center where she remains in custody without the opportunity for bond after being charged with DWI and the hold from Pitt County.

On Saturday around 9 p.m. police conducted a checking station at Old Farm near Rollingwood roads when a vehicle operated by Nykia Kishay Pitt, 29, of Garysburg approached.

Lieutenant D. Newsome instantly noticed the smell of alcohol coming from inside the vehicle.  Newsome determined Pitt had a suspended driver’s license and after further interactions determined she showed signs of impairment.

Officer M. Morris took over the investigation and determined that Pitt was impaired after conducting Standardized Field Sobriety Testing.

Pitt was placed under arrest and taken to the police department where she provided a .09 breath sample.

Pitt was subsequently charged with DWI and driving while license revoked.

She received a July 19 district court date and was released to a sober party.
