A Colonial Heights, Virginia, child was found safe in Weldon Monday night after she was abducted from her home.

Weldon police served two Roanoke Rapids men, Travis D. Bennett and Troy Elmore Patterson, with fugitive warrants by Colonial Heights police for the abduction, Weldon Deputy Chief James Avens said.

A third Roanoke Rapids man, Travis Harvey,is wanted and faces charges, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported today.

Another man, Ryan Garner, was served an outstanding warrant from the Roanoke Rapids Police Department, Avens said.

The Times-Dispatch reported the three men forced their way into the Colonial Heights home Monday, abducting the girl.

According to Colonial Heights police, Bennett and the two other men came to a home in the 200 block of Lakeview Park Road and tried to force the girl and her mother, with whom Bennett had been with in a prior relationship, into a vehicle. While the suspects were able to get the girl into the vehicle, her mother managed to escape and call police.

Avens said the call of a possible location in Halifax County came in around 11:25 p.m. and Weldon police were dispatched to a cell phone ping in the 800 block of Elm Street.

Colonial Heights also contacted the state Highway Patrol, asking them to look in a location in Roanoke Rapids before getting the call to proceed to Weldon, Trooper J.D. Warren Jr. said.

Avens said at Elm Street, Weldon police Sergeant Lee Mason noticed a car matching the description of what Virginia authorities gave out.

Patterson was in the car, along with the girl, who was crying.

Mason noticed the blinds at the house move and called for additional units. Weldon Officer Hunter Wheeler, Warren and Trooper Danny Edwards responded, along with multiple Halifax County Sheriff's Office deputies and Master Officer Roy Ball of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department.

There, Bennett and Patterson were served and jailed on $100,000 secured bonds.

Grant received a $5,000 bond and July 13 court date.

“It was a great job,” Avens said. “It takes a lot of working together to get the bad guys off the street.”

Avens said all were arrested without trouble.

Warren said after receiving the initial call, Highway Patrol went to Weldon. “Weldon located the car and located the child in the car.”

Officers also located a stolen TV from the Virginia house, he said.

Warren, who said the case is going to be adopted federally, placed the girl in his patrol car for safety reasons. “I was with her for two hours. She was fine.”

Warren said the teamwork resulted in a safe outcome. “I think it's great, the teamwork among the agencies to bring this to an end and bring her back to her family unharmed.”

After the ordeal, Warren drove the child to the Virginia Welcome Center where he met Colonial Heights authorities who gave the girl a Teddy Bear.

Bennett, 33; Patterson, 19; and Harvey, 31, have been charged with felony abduction, the Times-Dispatch reported.
