The Halifax County Rural Life Center will discuss with county management the best way to use a $10,000 grant awarded it by the Atlantic Coast Pipeline Friday.

“We have a lot of needs,” said Joe Long, director of the center, which is located off Highway 903 outside Halifax. “We're looking at places to put it.”

It is expected some of the money will be used for the center's upcoming schedule of summer camps, said Arthur Whitehead, county cooperative extension director. “We haven't finalized, but it will help some kids get to camp and help the camps overall.”

Long said he was pleased with the donation. “It was very nice. It's just something they wanted to do.”

County Manager Tony Brown said the money will be a big help for the center. “They certainly have a lot of needs. This will go a long way to address them. They have a positive impact on the community.”

In a statement released after the check presentation, Dominion Senior Energy Policy Director Bruce McKay said, “Our company and all the partner companies involved in the Atlantic Coast Pipeline are honored to support Halifax County’s outstanding summer youth programs. We recognize how important it is for young people to have a safe and educational environment to spend their summers, and we could not be more impressed with all of the exciting programs the 4-H Center offers to this community.”

Halifax County Board of Commissioners Chairman Vernon Bryant said, “Halifax County is grateful for the goodwill shown by the Atlantic Coast Pipeline project for its generous donation for 4-H programming. Agriculture plays a significant role in the economy of Halifax County, and these funds will enhance 4-H programs for our youngest citizens as they learn and continue the honorable tradition of agriculture in this county.”

State Representative Michael Wray, who also attended the presentation said, “I applaud the ACP Community Investment Program for recognizing the important work that the 4-H Rural Life Center is doing for our youth in Halifax County. These grants will go a long way in helping Halifax County to continue enriching the lives of our young people with fun and educational opportunities.”
