If there are two people in the world who deserve each other and should take a long hiatus from the pubic view it’s New York soda czar Michael Bloomberg and Republican eye candy Ann Coulter.

Each have shown me in their own inept way they perhaps should take this hiatus together where they relax and learn about the Constitution and the principles of freedom and liberty.

The New York Post this weekend released more details on Bloomberg’s soda ban while Coulter took the stereotypical view the Libertarian platform is only concerned about pot and gay marriage.

Both these quote-unquote great minds need to go to a cabin deep in the woods and not return until they’ve shown they can play nice with others and respect the freedom the country was based upon.

Bloomberg’s soda ban, ridiculous as it was to begin with, becomes even more so when you read the fine print and the fear here is that other governments, perhaps even nationally, may decide to control what the public puts in their bodies.

As well meaning as the soda ban may be you just can’t control what the public decides to eat or drink. It’s an affront to the very ideals that make up the freedom we have enjoyed in this country.

Bloomberg’s soda ban not only means no more 2-liter drinks that come with pizza delivery, but no more pitchers of soda at places like Chuck E. Cheese’s and restrictions on certain mixers used in bars where bottle service is available.

The ban, which goes into effect next month, should be seen as a slap in the face to every liberty loving soul in the planet.

Then there’s the odd case of Ms. Coulter and her use of a word we can’t print here in describing Libertarians.

Ms. Coulter essentially said Libertarians are focused on two issues: Marijuana legalization and gay marriage.

If Ms. Coulter did any research on her own she would find out — surprise, surprise — she has fallen into the same trap her fellow conservatives have when describing the Libertarian platform.

The Libertarian platform goes well beyond ganja and gays, it goes into economic policy, education, healthcare and government reform. But folks like Ms. Coulter use the gay and ganja offensive when they can no longer stomach the truth being told that their platform is no closer to the Constitution than Czar Bloomberg’s soda ban is.

And if Ms. Coulter truly understood the marijuana platform, she would see getting high is not the big issue in it, the big issue is an economic opportunity that frees up a plant whose uses range from clothing to fuel.

Maybe it’s just too simple for them to see how they just don’t get it, the two of them miles apart in ideology yet so close it makes you wonder if the chasm is really that wide. Some time together may do them good. It certainly won’t hurt those in the public who can think for themselves and don’t need Big Brother babysitting them — Lance Martin
