As of this morning, 179 people have voted in our Facebook poll on what the best use for the old airport property should be.
The overwhelming thought among our Facebook fans is a recreation facility needs to be developed there. There were 110 votes for recreation.
There were 49 votes for industry. Five people feel housing should be a priority.
One person voted for commercial and 14 voted for other uses.
While we don’t claim this poll to be a truly scientific one, we do believe it gives a snapshot of what people feel and that should be weighed in the research the University of North Carolina is doing on the project.
rrspin.com’s official stance has not been determined, although we lean to industrial development because we feel there needs to be more industry in the area to make up for the sad loss of our textile mills.
However, you can’t argue that a sports complex, drag strip or similar facility wouldn’t enhance economic development.
If you look at other areas with beautiful sports complexes for baseball, softball and soccer, you see people, people who are eating in restaurants, staying in hotels and buying gas.
There are also several disc golf fanatics in the area who believe the property would be suited for a course, which we believe could be incorporated into a sports complex idea.
While we were surprised, and maybe we shouldn’t have been, there were several in our poll who believe a drag strip would be a good use for the old airport property.
There are also several who believe the property should be turned into an emergency responder training facility.
All these are excellent ideas.
Reviewing the election returns, we are appreciative of the fans who voted and we believe their voices should be considered by the people who will make the decision on the future of this property.
We only know that whatever is done with this property, it should be something that will boost the economy, provide jobs and enhance the quality of life in the Roanoke River Low Country — Editor.
