This week in our Roanoke Rapids Graded School District, our students, staff, and leaders demonstrated once again that learning goes far beyond the classroom.
From health science and manufacturing experiences to district leadership at the state level, and even preparations for community celebrations, it has been a week full of growth, pride, and connection.
Health Science Academy: Learning Healthy Living by Doing
Students from our RRGSD Health Sciences Academy, coordinated by Ginger Duncan, participated in a Cooking Matters session that combined nutrition education with hands-on fun. They learned about the benefits of incorporating fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into their daily meals in the session led by Shannon Vasalinda, Registered Dietitian and Clinical Nutrition Manager at ECU Health.
Students did not just listen — they cooked, too! Students explored a colorful variety of fruits, some less common than what you might find in a typical lunchbox, and they ended the session by preparing a delicious and nutritious treat: banana pudding in a bag, made with vanilla yogurt, granola, and applesauce.
But the week did not stop there.
Health Sciences Academy students also attended a “mini camp” at ECU North, where they practiced vital emergency response skills such as CPR and Stop the Bleed techniques.
These are more than just classroom lessons. They are lifesaving skills that build confidence, readiness, and responsibility.
It is inspiring to see our students gaining both professional and personal tools that will serve them for years to come.
Connecting Education to Industry: Advanced Manufacturing Students Tour Reser’s
In celebration of National Manufacturing Week, our Advanced Manufacturing students had the opportunity to explore local career opportunities right here in Halifax County.
Thanks to Cathy Scott, executive director of the Halifax County Economic Development Commission, as well as Madison Prince at Reser’s, and our wonderful staff Christina Henderson, Candy Moseley, and Brody Griffies, our students enjoyed an in-depth tour of Reser’s Fine Foods.
Students witnessed firsthand the teamwork, technology, and precision that go into modern manufacturing.
This type of exposure is critical; it helps students see the direct link between what they are learning in school and the well-paying, high-demand careers available right here at home.
As a district, we are committed to helping students discover their passions, connect with local industries, and envision a future of opportunity without having to leave Halifax County.
On the topic of professional growth, I had the honor of presenting this week at the North Carolina Federal Education Program Administrators Conference in Greensboro.
My session focused on helping new federal programs directors navigate the Comprehensive Consolidated Improvement Plan, which is a critical component of the federal programs application process.
It was a privilege to share insights, answer questions, and collaborate with other educational leaders across our state who, like us, are working to ensure that federal resources are used strategically to support every student.
I am proud that Roanoke Rapids continues to be represented in state-level conversations about innovation, compliance, and best practices in education.
