As we step into February, we continue to celebrate the hard work and achievements of our students and staff across our Roanoke Rapids Graded School District.
This week’s edition of The Yellow Jacket Report highlights academic progress, important transitions, artistic excellence, and the critical planning efforts underway for the next school year.
Academic Growth at Manning Elementary
We are especially proud of Mrs. Erica Myrick's third-grade students at Manning Elementary School.
Every single student in her class demonstrated growth on his or her middle-of-year i-Ready Reading diagnostic assessment.
This is an incredible achievement and a testament to both the dedication of our teachers and the determination of our students.
One of the key milestones in our district’s Vision 2035 strategic plan is ensuring that all fifth-grade students leave elementary school reading on grade level and beginning to engage in deeper learning. Mrs. Myrick’s students are showing us that with hard work and support, this goal is within reach.

Congratulations to Mrs. Myrick and her students on this outstanding accomplishment!
Preparing Chaloner Middle School Students for High School
Eighth-grade students at Chaloner Middle School are actively preparing for their transition to high school.
Recently, they met in-person with Roanoke Rapids High School counselors, Mrs. Jessica Elias and Ms. Sabrina Hunter, and virtually in an evening open house with school and district staff to discuss course options and academic planning.
Students, in collaboration with their families, have also been completing their ninth-grade registration forms. One of the most exciting parts of this transition is the upcoming visit to Roanoke Rapids High School on Thursday, February 6, 2025.
Buses will depart from Chaloner at 8:45 a.m., allowing students to experience a firsthand look at Roanoke Rapids High School.
Additionally, students have been working with CMS school counselor Mrs. Schna Jeffers to develop their Career Development Plans. These steps are crucial in meeting another goal of Vision 2035: ensuring all eighth-grade students leave middle school with strong emotional and social health, academic skills, and career awareness.
We appreciate the dedication of our counselors and teachers in making this transition smooth and meaningful for our students.
A Celebration of the Arts at Belmont Elementary
Belmont Elementary School recently hosted its second annual Night of the Arts on Thursday, January 30th, and what a fantastic evening it was!
Families were treated to a beautifully curated student art gallery, showcasing a variety of creative works, from miniature paintings to expressive drawings.
Following the gallery walk, families gathered in the multi-purpose room for a special musical performance, where students proudly showcased songs they have been practicing in music class.
The event saw an incredible turnout, with over 342 parents and students in attendance.
The enthusiasm and talent displayed by our young artists and musicians made the night a true celebration of creativity and community.
Thank you to the teachers, staff, and
administrators who organized this event and to our families for their continued support of the arts in our schools!
Looking Ahead: Planning for the Future
As February begins, we find ourselves in a period of reflection and planning. This is a time when our administrators are balancing the demands of the current school year while preparing for the next. Our student-athletes and coaches are experiencing a similar transition, as they finish winter sports and gear up for spring competition.
On Friday, January 31, our school administrators completed their second round of teacher observations and post-observation conferences. These meetings allow teachers and administrators to discuss progress toward professional development goals and instructional effectiveness.
Meanwhile, our district administrators have been hard at work planning for the 2025-26 school year. Key initiatives include:
Developing the district budget for the upcoming school year,
Transitioning our student information system from PowerSchool to Infinite Campus,
Applying for grants in areas such as Career and Technical Education (CTE), exceptional children’s services, and consolidated federal programs.
We know that planning for the future is strongest when it includes input from our families and community members.
We invite you to share your thoughts on what is working well in our schools and what areas may need improvement. Your feedback is invaluable in shaping the direction of our district.
