Mildred “Deedie” Hill Moncure, peacefully departed her earthly home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 17, 2023.

She was born to Dr. Philip L. Hill, Jr. and Mildred Lipscomb at their home on September 22, 1930.

Deedie grew up in Colonial Heights, VA as the youngest of her siblings Philip Hill, III, Emily Hill Dodge, and Edward Hill.

After earning her degree from William & Mary in 1952, Deedie married her loving husband Henry Buchanan Moncure, Sr. and began her long teaching career that stretched from Virginia to Northampton and Halifax counties in North Carolina.

During that time, the couple moved to North Carolina and built their life together, where they welcomed five children into their family.

When her grandchildren were born, “Nanny” retired from teaching, but she continued to be a public servant by staying very involved in her community.

She was an active member of Alpha Delta Kappa; she volunteered at local organizations including Meals on Wheels and the Salvation Army; and she served for many years as the treasurer and a member of the choir at All Saints’ Episcopal Church.

Her favorite pastimes, by far, were spending time with her family and traveling.

Deedie is preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, her husband, her son Henry Moncure, Jr., and one grandchild.

She is survived by her children Mildred Moncure of Garysburg, NC, Fontaine Gibbons and her husband Billy of Chester, VA, Elizabeth “Betsy” Moncure and her significant other Vic Hague of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Philip Moncure of Roanoke Rapids, NC.

She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, 11 grandchildren, and many more great-grandchildren who she loved dearly.

A family graveside service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting contributions be made to Camp HOPE (Guilford County FJC – Camp HOPE) 201 S Greene St., Greensboro, NC 27401.
