Clara Louise Whitehurst Garris, 89 of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Monday, February 27, 2023 in The Landings of Lake Gaston.

Mrs. Garris was the daughter of the late Mattie Rae Butler and Hugh Elmore Whitehurst and was the widow of the late Carl P. Garris.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

She spent her life in service to others. She was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church since just after it began in a rented house on Harris Street.

Her faith and devotion were a testament to all those around her. She loved serving by teaching Sunday school to eager 1st and 2nd graders for as long as can be remembered. She taught children and then their children sharing God's word with generations shaping their tender lives.

Many remember her years at Leggett/Belk where she made lifelong friends with co-workers and the many customers from the surrounding area. Her joy came in returning customers who knew she would personally fit their children with the perfect outfit along with the smile.

She was blessed after her retirement to enjoy 28 years of caring for family, devoting her time to church, delivering the church flowers to shut-ins, visiting the sick and spreading her cheer at local rest homes. Her life was dedicated to the happiness of others.

She will be remembered for her infectious smile and the way she lit up the room with her kind spirit. She will be dearly missed and loved by all her family and friends.

Surviving include her daughters Beverly Garris Williams (Ken) of Las Vegas, NV, and Cindy Garris Boone (Jay) of Roanoke Rapids, her grandchildren: Melissa Williams, Garrett Boone, and Ryan Boone; and her great grandchildren: Samantha Biggerstaff, Ashlee Biggerstaff, and Angel Williams.

Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, March 5, 2023, in Calvary Baptist Church with Pastors Andy Sloan and Randy Martin officiating.  Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 PM on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at Wrenn Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church.
