Wesley Brown Hamby, 72, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, went to be with his Heavenly Father, Wednesday, June 17, 2020.

Wes was a native of Franklin County, Georgia. 

He was the youngest son of the late John Luther Hamby and Elizabeth Brown Hamby of Lavonia, Franklin County, Georgia. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Frank, William, and Lee and his sister Mildred H. Kaufman.

Wes served his country four years in the US Navy and was a graduate of Wilson Community College with an A.S. degree in Fire Science Technology. 

He was retired as Battalion Chief from the Roanoke Rapids Fire Dept. with 33 years of service. Wes was baptized in the Baptist faith and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. 

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and billiards. He cherished spending time with his wife, daughter, granddaughter and great-grandsons and with his friends Mike, Carl, John, Robert and Jesse known as the “Geritol Group.”

One of his favorite sayings was “Don’t worry about the little things and let all things be little.”

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Susan Coley Hamby; daughter Jennifer Hamby; granddaughter Ashley Askew Lewis and great-grandsons Jordan Matthew, Ashton Troy and Dillyn Weston Lewis; nephew Don Kaufman and nieces Lois Kaufman and Sarah H. Dickens; sister-in-law Leah Everette.

Wes will be cremated in accordance with his request, and burial will be in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids. 

A celebration of life memorial service will be held with firefighter honors June 26, at 11:00 AM, with Rev. Andy Sloan and Rev. Randy Martin officiating. 

Arrangements are being handled by Wrenn, Clarke & Hagan Funeral Home. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or to a favorite charity of choice.
