It is with deep sadness that we announce Betty Lou Gilliam High, 90, stepped over the earthly threshold and entered her Heavenly home on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, with her family by her side.
Betty was born in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina on April 21, 1936, to the late Roy and Estella Gilliam, née King.
Betty was very active throughout her lifetime and worked in various roles. From a young age, she busied herself always working diligently to support her family. She worked as an electrician, then at the cotton mill until her husband, WL, built a grocery store with a meat counter which she managed. WL also started High’s Motorcycle Shop which she loved being a part of because she loved riding motorcycles--The sense of freedom while feeling the wind on her face was one of her greatest passions.

In addition to her parents, Betty is also preceded in death by her loving husband, WL High; sons, Ricky High and Ray High; brother, Bobby Gilliam; and sister, Peggy Gilliam Rose.
Betty leaves to cherish her memory her loving daughter, Glenda High Howerton; brother, Leroy Gilliam (Linda); grandchildren, Brandi Hewlett (Andy), Winter Green (Jason), and Billi Pearson; four great grandchildren; her beloved fur baby and long-time companion, Little Bit; and many extended family and friends.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 3, from 5 until 7 pm at Wrenn Funeral Home, 1015 West 5th Street, Roanoke Rapids. Funeral Services will be held for Betty at 2 pm on Monday, May 4, 2026, in the chapel of Wrenn Funeral Home with Pastor Wayne Marshall officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery.
The family wishes to express their thanks to everyone who assisted in Betty’s care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty’s memory to Tabernacle Baptist Church, 163 Driftwood Lane, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.
Arrangements are under the compassionate care of Wrenn Funeral Home and online condolences may be shared with the family at www.wrennfh.com
