M. Ray Mabrey, 82, of Roanoke Rapids passed away Friday, March 1, 2024, at UNC Rex Healthcare in Raleigh.

Ray was born December 30, 1941 in Roanoke Rapids. Ray was the son of the late Millard R. Mabrey and Viola Harris Mabrey. Ray was also preceded in death by his sisters, Mittie Ann Hux and Elsie M. Richardson and his granddaughter, Jessica Mabrey.

Ray graduated from William R. Davie High School in 1961. Ray was an avid basketball and softball player all through school. He was employed with J.P. Stevens Company as a supervisor over the fabricating plant for many years. Ray received his associate degree from Atlantic Christian College and taught school at Northwest High School and was also the girls’ softball coach until his retirement. Ray was a member of Good News Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher and a lay leader for many years. He served on the board of directors for Heart Park. After his retirement he spent a lot of his time doing yard work and watching old westerns, basketball games and baseball games on T.V.

Ray is survived by his wife Lula Allen “Pie” Mabrey; his children, Terry R. Mabrey and Jeff A. Mabrey and his wife Margie Jo and Susan M. Bonilla and her husband Joel. His grandchildren, Brandon, Josh, Justin, Matt, Jordan, Ashley M. Reid, Mindy N. Liles and Katie Bonilla; his great grandchildren, Kayla, Bryce, Brystol, Alyssa, Ryleigh, Trinity, Isaiah, Jase, Aria, Selena, Nadia, Kannon, Baleigh, Harper, and Seth.

Ray is survived by his wife Lula Allen “Pie” Mabrey; his children, Terry R. Mabrey and Jeff A. Mabrey and his wife Margie Jo and Susan M. Bonilla and her husband Joel. His grandchildren, Brandon, Josh, Justin, Matt, Jordan, Ashley M. Reid, Mindy N. Liles and Katie Bonilla; his great grandchildren, Kayla, Bryce, Brystol, Alyssa, Jase, Aria, Selena, Nadia, Kannon, Baleigh, Harper and Seth.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at Good News Baptist Church, 714 Highway 125, Roanoke Rapids, with Rev. Jimmy King officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday, March 4, 2024 from 7:00 - 8:30 P.M. at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.
