Johnnie Lee Pope, 89, of Roanoke Rapids passed away after a long illness at his home Thursday, October 13, 2022, at home.

Johnnie was born March 9, 1933 in Northampton County to the late Reddick Pope and Betty Hooper Pope. He was also preceded in death by his Aunt and Uncle, Robert and Mamie Pope Draper, who raised him in Seaboard, NC.

 

Johnnie is survived by his loving wife, Barbara S. Pope of the home; his daughters, Marie Pope of Rocky Mount, Brenda Pope Odom and her husband Charlie of Nashville, NC and Sheryll Pope Albert and her husband Harry of Cary, NC; his step-daughter, Jo Barber and her husband

Henry of Williamston, NC; his cousin, Robert draper and his wife Glenda of Seaboard; his grandchildren, Sherrie Radloff of Missouri, Stephen Radloff and his wife Tosha of Bresse, IL, Matthew Radloff and his wife Amanda of Bresse, IL, Crystal Odom Dawes of Nashville, NC and Lindsey

Odom Yarbrough and her husband Chuck of Nashville, NC; step-grand-children, Karagyn Barber and Brady Barber of Williamston and twelve great-grandchildren. Special love and thanks to his caregivers, Sheree Robinson, Mariam Jordan, Sylvia Roberson, Barbara Walker and Community Home Health and Hospice. 

Johnnie served 13 years in the USAF 20ᵗʰ Fighter Bomber Wing and always spoke highly of his German shepherds Hasso and Trigger. After his military career, he served 31 years in the NC Department of Corrections and retired. Johnnie and Barbara loved to dance and could be seen frequently at the dance in Lasker, NC and the Chattahoochee. His favorite song was Johnnie be good! Johnnie was proud to be a direct descendant of the signers of the Declaration of Independence (William Hooper) NC.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at Seaboard Cemetery in Seaboard, NC with Pastor Danny Jones officiating. Military honors will be performed by the U. S. Air Force Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Monday, October 17, 2022, at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Flowers or memorial gifts are accepted, in lieu of flowers donations to St. Jude Childrens Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
