Her mother used to love telling stories about carrying her around on a baby pillow.

She loved growing up in Halifax with three younger brothers and lots of cousins.

She graduated from Saint Mary’s and received her B.S. from Converse College in South Carolina.

She then moved to New York City and earned her Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Columbia University.

She then moved back to Halifax County and taught elementary school in Roanoke Rapids where she met and married Rex Carter (who was the basketball coach and history teacher).

She was preceded in death by her parents Fletcher Harrison Gregory and Boyd Thorne Gregory, her husband Rex Hampton Carter, her son Fletcher Carter and three brothers, Fletcher, Sam and Thorne Gregory.

Agnes was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  Her family was the center of her life.  She was loved and admired for her sweet spirit and determination and was often heard to say, “I just take everything and do the best that I can.”

Agnes is survived by her daughter, Ann Boyd Smith (Worley) of Henrico, NC, Elizabeth Haggerty (Tom) of Asheville, NC, her grandchildren Missy Odom (Ken) and EB Odom (Richard) of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Kenneth Haggerty of Memphis, TN, Michael Haggerty of Davis, CA, Marshall Carter of Pittsburgh, PA, and Ella Carter of Chapel Hill, NC and great-grandchildren, Kenny Odom, Carter Odom, Emma Odom and Susanna Odom.

A graveside service will be held at Cedarwood Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 with Rev. Sonny Browne officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, PO Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5014 or The Historic Halifax Restoration Association, PO Box 187, Halifax, NC 27839.  The family would like to extend a special note of appreciation to Ruth Medlin, the hospice employees and all of her loving friends and caregivers.
