John Rives “Judge” Manning, Jr., 84, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2025.
He was a native of Halifax County and was the son of the late John Rives Manning, Sr. and Sarah Boswood Manning.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Judy Staten Manning and a son, John William Manning.
He was a Veteran of the United States Army, a graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School, class of 1958 and NC State University. He was a member of the American Legion, Sons of the American Revolution.

He was the owner of an independent insurance agency and was an entrepreneur his entire life. He served on the board of the Halifax County Commissioners for many years.
Rives is survived by his son, Arlie Manning and his wife, Erica of Youngsville; his granddaughter, Charlotte “Charlie” Manning; and his special loving companion, Helen Bush of Roanoke Rapids.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025 at 1:00 PM in the chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. James Rawls officiating.
Interment will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with military honors.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 28, 2025 at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids from 6:00-7:30 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
