A Roanoke Rapids man who completed his federal supervised release in 2021 faces new local charges following his arrest Wednesday on felony cocaine counts.
A Winston-Salem man who was at the residence of 43-year-old Robert Champion Jr. on James Court was arrested and charged on felony marijuana counts, according to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.
Major Anzell Harris said agents received complaints several months ago that Champion was running an open-air market. There were people hanging out in the street and there was foot and vehicle traffic coming through at all hours.
On Wednesday around 6 p.m. a search warrant was executed and agents located numerous items related to drug sales. Agents located and seized crack cocaine, powder cocaine, marijuana, digital scales, currency and a loaded firearm.

Champion has a history of drug dealing and in 2014 was sentenced to 70 months for intentionally, and unlawfully distributing more than 28 grams of cocaine base. In 2021 his supervised release was lifted.
Champion was arrested and charged with possession with intent to manufacture/sell/deliver schedule II controlled substance, felony possession of cocaine, possession with intent to sell/deliver marijuana, felony possession of marijuana, felony maintaining dwelling for controlled substances and possessing firearm by a convicted felon.
Champion received a $22,500 bond with a January 23 district court date.
Todd Lynch, 30, of Winston-Salem was in the residence and found to be in possession of a felony amount illegal drugs.
Lynch was arrested and charged with possession with intent to sell/deliver marijuana, felony possession of marijuana and maintaining vehicle with controlled substance.
Lynch received a $7,500 bond, with a January 23 district court date.
Agents of the Halifax Regional Drug and Gang Task Force with the assistance of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department Investigation Division, sheriff’s office Criminal Investigation and Patrol Divisions, patrol captain and chief deputy executed the search warrant.
